Alpine Pastures
Farming the alpine meadows is a centuries old tradition in the areas around Berchtesgaden. Not only the alpine meadows are farmed but the wood pastures around Roßfeld are also used. Mountain farmers are granted the right to farm the pastures and with regard to the green alders farmers also have the right to schwidden cultivation (slash and burn cultivation or cultivation through tree debarking; green alders are a dwarfed form of alder trees found above 1,500 m).
Throughout the grazing season, about 20 alpine farmers offer locally produced alpine meadow milk and sausages. One individual distillery of gentian liquor is still allowed to dig for the otherwise protected Bavarian gentian.
